Deer Mouse

Rarely found in homes, this brown mouse has white feet and a white underbelly. It's round body is 5 to 8 inches long.

Problem

The deer mouse transmits the potentially fatal Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. The disease can be transmitted through contact with mouse carcasses.

Prevention

To keep mice and other rodents out, make sure all holes of larger diameter than a pencil are sealed. Seal any cracks and voids. Ensure proper drainage at building foundations and always install gutters or diverts which will channel water away from the building.

House Mouse

Very common in most parts of the world, house mice have a light-brown to black coloring and are typically 2 inches long.

Problem

Mice can bring fleas, mites, ticks and lice into your home as well as aggravate children's allergies. They can damage your home and contaminate your stored food.

Prevention

To keep mice and other rodents out, make sure all holes of larger diameter than a pencil are sealed. Seal any cracks and voids. Exercise proper sanitation and garbage disposal to prevent mice form becoming attracted to your home.

Norway Rat

Including the tail, Norway rats grow to be 10 to 12 inches long. Their coloring is varied - gray, brown or black.

Problem

In addition to spreading diseases, rats can chew through wiring, causing fires.

Prevention

Keep firewood stored well away from the structure. Remove debris piles. Seal any holes larger than 1/4 inch. Remove moisture and harborage sources. Exercise proper sanitation and garbage disposal to prevent rats from becoming attracted to your home.

Roof Rats

Sixteen total inches in length, these black rats are usually found in the upper parts of buildings.

Problem

Roof rats are known for the damage they cause by chewing on materials and eating stored foods.

Prevention

To prevent rats from entering a home, seal up any holes or cracks larger than a quarter. Remove sources of moisture and harborage.
