Ants
Carpenter Ants
Identification
Most commonly they are black, but some species are red or a combination of red and black. They are comparatively large ants, with the adult workers measuring up to 5/8" in length.
Problem
Carpenter ants damage wooden structural members by tunneling in the wood to build their nest. Once they gain entry into a structure, they pose a serious threat to damage the wood inside.
Prevention
Carpenter ants mainly attack wood that is or has been wet and damaged by mold. Eliminate standing water or sources of moisture around your house. Do not store firewood or other wooden beams against, under or
in close proximity to your house. Remove any tree limbs which overhang and come in contact with your roof. Inspect your gutters and downspouts for obstructions as well as fascia boards for possible wood rot damage.
Fire Ants
Identification
Dark reddish brown in color, fire ants vary in size from 1/8" to 3/8". They are primarily ground nesting ants, and prefer to build their nests where the moisture and temperature are more constant, such as under sidewalks or against telephone poles. Their nests are usually very large and easily identifiable. When disturbed, these ants will aggressively defend their nest.
Problem
Their painful stings are a nuisance to many and life-threatening to others. The victim usually receives more than one of the bites that are identified as raised welts on the skin.
Prevention
Their nests can be built anywhere from an open lawn to against the side of your house. To prevent their entry, seal all internal and external cracks and crevices.
